Levels of Existence

Past – Present – Future

The next area of personal awareness is called the Levels of Existence. The Levels of Existence are simply the past, the present, and the future. Understanding and recognizing where we spend most of our time is critical in discovering who we are. Most people are not conscious of the present. They spend most of their day thinking about how things used to be or how they wish things would be.

You must come into the present in order to enter the future. People who live in the past are like someone driving on a freeway at over 100 miles/hour with their eyes fixed on the rearview mirror. They will surely crash, yet they refuse to look out through the windshield at the present or consider the future. They are usually unforgiving people and often difficult to get along with in Relationships. Fear surrounds their lives. They become easy targets for the enemy's attacks because the further they withdraw into the past the further they withdraw from God. God is only available to us in the present.

People who live in the present get the most out of life. They can easily forgive others. Forgiveness only happens in the present because whatever happened to you in the past is not happening to you now. Transforming and renewing the mind happens only in present. Relationships are established only in the present. Faith is possible only in the present. Healing is possible only in the present. Most importantly, salvation is possible only in the present. All of the promises of God are available only in the present.

The most important aspect of the future is that all hope is contained in the future. Focus on the future helps to erase the past. There are many dream killers lining the paths of the present. These dream killers have already lost their hope and given up their dreams. Hope of the future pulls us past these dream killers and strengthens us in our darkest times. The promises of God are the hope of the future. Eternal life through Jesus Christ is God's greatest promise. Jesus is the hope of the future.

The past is just a memory and the future is just a dream, but the present is the reality found somewhere in between. Do not be confused about where you are in your life. Stay in the Word of God by reading and meditating on it daily. The Word of God keeps us grounded in the present. His Word keeps us on course and walking on a straight path.
